THE SECOND COMING
Welcome to issue number two of the OzProg Newsletter. As a signed-up member to our newsletter you will now receive monthly updates of what's happening on our website as well as special exclusive content - this edition we have a full-text transcript of our interview with Porcupine Tree helmsman Steven Wilson, so check that out below.
Don't forget to tell your friends, family members and the gimp in the basement to sign up as well - just direct them to www.ozprog.com/newsletter where they can enter their email address.
WHAT'S NEW
Soundwave and its line-up full of international bands has come and gone allowing us to focus on things a bit closer to home. Fans of the new breed of Aussie progressive hard rock will be stoked with the recent announcements of full national tours by both Karnivool and Cog (following The Butterfly Effect's announcement a few weeks ago), as well as the discovery that up-and-coming Melbourne prog band Sleep Parade will be supporting Porcupine Tree on their Australian tour.
In addition to that, the anticipated debut EP from Sydney post-rockers sleepmakeswaves is out now - do yourself a favour and check these guys out, they're one of the best new bands to come out of Sydney in years.
On OzProg, we were lucky enough to be one of the only local publications to talk to Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree ahead of their hugely anticipated maiden tour of Australia. Some tickets are still available to their string of three east coast shows, but don't wait too long!
Other recent interviews include Travis Stever of Coheed and Cambria and Tuomas Holopainen from Nightwish.
WHAT'S COMING UP
Coming up in the next few weeks we have interviews with Luke Gower (Cog), Lauren Harris (daughter of Iron Maiden's Steve) and Tobias Sammett (Avantasia), so look out for those!
EXCLUSIVE - STEVEN WILSON INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT
When OzProg contributing editor Andrew Saltmarsh had a chat with Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson, we had so much material to work with that we had to cut out almost half of it before we put it up on the website. So as a small gift to our newsletter early-adopters we've transcribed the entire conversation and put it up on the site exclusively for subscribers.
To read it, go to www.ozprog.com/newsletter/steven_wilson.php and enter the email address you signed up to the newsletter with.
FEATURED ARTIST - MUSHROOM GIANT
We've introduced a new feature to OzProg where we can highlight some of our personal favourite local bands. First cab off the rank is Melburnian post-rockers Mushroom Giant, who prompted the following comments on the OzProg forum:
"daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn this shit is the beez kneez!!" - Flan
"Oh. My. God?! That was orgasmic. Sirenthia, I mean. First track I listened to on their Myspace and it just made my jaw drop. Literally." - l0stwhispers
"Wow. Fucking SWEET. I really dig this band :)." - Eternal Dragon
They launch their new album Kuru in Sydney on April 5th at the Excelsior with OzProg favourites sleepmakeswaves, Meniscus and Los Alamos.
